3 Hacks to Curb Impulse Buying

3 Hacks to Curb Impulse Buying

May 22, 2024

Resist the “buy” button with these three simple tips.

For some, it’s FOMO – fear of missing out on a great buy. For others, it’s seeing the latest gadget in their feed and feeling like they “have to have it.”

Most of the time, that excitement fades long before the credit card statement arrives. And too much impulse buying can rob your bank account and your retirement savings. Rest assured, you’re hardly alone:

  • The average American spends $450 every month on impulse buys.1
  • 64% say they regretted making a purchase on social media.1
  • One in four shoppers makes at least one impulse buy every week.2

Try these three tips to curb the urge to buy:

  1. Delete shopping apps from your phone.
  2. Clear the cookies in your browser, to reduce the number of ads you’re served.
  3. Observe the 24-hour rule: Take a day to consider the purchase, read reviews, and just slow your roll when it comes to buying.
